For U.S. distributors of Japanese, Chinese, and Korean OEM cable, committing to “minimum” orders of 15,000-100,000 feet of cable per order may be a risky venture—especially when Asian lead-times are trending at three to six months.
Despite the shortage and cost of cargo containers—most are stacked on ships or at ports near you—the gridlock of cargo ships is a matter unto itself. In the third week of September, 97 ships idled off the Port of Los Angeles and Long Beach waiting to berth. Imports are greatly outpacing exports.
When container ships do berth, offloading cargo is more time-consuming if ships unload 18,000 containers (TEUs) as opposed to 8,000; and many ports are already stacked with colorful container high-rises which are likely incurring surcharges. Chassis transportation to drive containers off port is experiencing its own snarls.
Whether it’s rare metals or resins comprising electrical components, production and the distribution of many of those products show demand heavily outweighing supply—many purchasers are citing lead-times into the spring of 2022 for certain electrical components.
Finally, when Asian cable does arrive to distributors in the U.S. from overseas, it’s limited. Limitations may include the number of available cable configurations, and color availability may be basic as well, such as in black.
The Interpower Advantage
Interpower manufacturers Japanese, Chinese, and Korean cable with proper approval marks (PSE, CCC, and KC respectively), and is manufactured and shipped directly from Lamoni, Iowa, located in the middle of America’s heartland. This allows OEMs to order all the configurations customers need without minimum order requirements. Customers can order as little as one foot of cable or as much as several thousand. Interpower offers Asian cable with Japanese, Chinese, and Korean approvals in multiple configurations and colors.
The following cable sizes refer to conductor size, not the outer diameter of the cable—
