Learn how Interpower IP54-rated IEC 60320 C14 inlets combined with an Interpower molded C13 and a connector lock can stop short circuiting and corrosive dust.
UL Testing Provides IP54 Rating for Interpower IEC 60320 C14 Inlets Face & Plug Seal Kits
Interpower’s C14 Face and Plug Seal Kits help keep water and dust away from electrical terminals
Recently, Interpower received a UL IP54 rating for its newly approved Face Seal and Plug Seal kits that are manufactured exclusively for Interpower’s IEC 60320 C14 inlet and molded C13 connector. The IP54 rating (solid particle ingress level 5, liquid ingress level 4), prevents corrosive dust and solid particles from reaching the terminals, and prevents liquids from short circuiting the terminals. The seal kits also help prevent damage to the equipment as well as bodily harm, the latter more likely to occur when terminals are wet or damp.
UL Ratings Under IEC 60529 Sec. 4.2, and Testing Parameters Sec. 13.4 and 14.2.4
At the UL lab, the new seal kits were exposed to the Liquid Ingress Protection Test, which is succinctly summed up by UL: “Test item sprayed with water from all directions using oscillating tube rig for 10 minutes.” Test result: “Pass” with a rating of 4. For the Solid Particle Protection Test, the result of which was described as, “1 mm diameter probe does not pass through any opening of the enclosure with 1 N test force and test item placed in dust chamber. Ingress of dust not totally prevented but dust does not interfere with operation,” which resulted in a Level 5 designation.
The IP54-rated Face and Plug Seal Kits are offered in separate kits with four corresponding part numbers.
Face Seal Kits
The Face Seal Kit comes in two options: C14 Screw-mount Quick Disconnect Kit, Part #83050000; and the Solder Tab Kit, part #83050010. These kits include a made-to-fit, moisture-resistant polyurethane insert which seals between the base of the C14 inlet and the face of the C13 connector, held in place after tightening of the connector lock. Note: The Face Seal Kit can only be used with an Interpower C13 connector due to the connector lock.
The Plug Seal Kit, part #83050020 for the Quick Disconnect Kit, and part #83050030 for the Solder Tabs Kit, has a front seal made of specialized PVC with a lower durometer rating (for flexibility) that inserts through the front of the inlet to protect the terminals. Plug Seal Kit also earned an IP54 rating but does not accept a connector lock.
A Final Word on the Easy Assembly and Description of the Interpower IP54 Seal Kits
The Face and plug Seal kits come with easy instructions printed on the kit bags. The components and directions are included—the only items not included are the #4-40 screws and #4-40 nuts. Equivalents of the #4-40 screws and nuts can also be used. An Interpower connector lock is then screwed into the C14 screw mount inlet and the panel seal with a 2 lb. torque. After seating the C13 connector into the C14 inlet, the connector lock screw can then be torqued up to 5.0 in/lbs (these instructions and more are included with the kits).
The Advantages of Interpower’s IP54 Face and Plug Seal Kits:
Keeps terminals dry around splashing water or other liquids
Prevents dust from building up around connectivity points
Interpower manufactures, tests, and ships North American and International cable, cords and cord sets, and components including IEC 60320 products such as its popular C13 connector and C14 inlet. These accessory power components pair well with Interpower’s Accessory Power Strips (APS) and Power Distribution Units (PDU) to help make electrical designs universal.
